Rooftop vs Ground-Mount vs Carport Solar: Which Suits Your Site? (2026)

Build 1 MW of solar on the ground and 1 MW on a roof, and they'll produce about the same energy each year. The ground-mount plant will usually cost Rs 35 to 38 per watt, against Rs 38 to 42 for the rooftop one. But it also needs 4 to 5 acres of land, and the rooftop plant needs none.
That's really the choice most Indian commercial and industrial buyers face. It isn't about which structure is "best". It's about which trade-off between land, cost and speed fits your site.
This guide lays out the numbers behind rooftop, ground-mount and carport solar in India, so you can decide based on your own constraints, not on whatever your EPC happens to specialise in.
Rooftop vs ground-mount vs carport solar: quick comparison
Factor | Rooftop | Ground-mount | Carport |
|---|---|---|---|
Typical cost (1 MW, India) | Rs 38–42/W | Rs 35–38/W | Higher than both; no reliable India benchmark yet |
Space needed for 1 MW | No land; roughly 80,000–1,00,000 sq ft of usable roof | 4–5 acres (up to about 6 with trackers) | Existing paved or parking area; no new land |
Structural work | Load check, roof penetrations or RCC pedestals | Foundations, fencing, land development | Steel or RCC canopy with deeper foundations |
Approvals | Quicker; fewer land clearances | Slower; land development, fencing, sometimes change of land use | Similar to ground-mount, plus time for civil design |
Best for | Buildings with enough roof area, load capacity and little shade | Open, unused or low-value land with good sun | Paved parking where the land is already fully used |
Rooftop solar: the easy option, if your roof allows it
When the roof cooperates, rooftop is the path of least resistance. That means it can take the load, it isn't heavily shaded, and there's enough unbroken area. As a rough guide, you'll need about 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft of clear, shade-free roof for every 100 kW. Because you're using a building that already exists, approvals tend to move faster and land-use conversion never comes up.
The downsides are cost and a hard cap. Rooftop runs about Rs 38 to 42 per watt, compared with Rs 35 to 38 for ground-mount. Part of that is the structural work: load assessments, managing roof penetrations, sometimes RCC pedestal mounts. It's simply fiddlier than building on open ground. And once the roof is full, that's it. Your capacity stops there, however much power the plant actually needs.
Ground-mount solar: lowest cost per watt, but you need land
If you have land that isn't earning its keep elsewhere, ground-mount is the cheaper route per watt. Plan on 4 to 5 acres of flat, unshaded land for 1 MW, or around 6 acres if you go with a single-axis tracker rather than fixed tilt.
There's a generation bonus too. Ground-mount plants usually produce a little more per installed kW than rooftop systems, because you can set the layout and orientation freely instead of working around a building.
The catch is obvious, but it's worth saying. Ground-mount only adds up where the land is cheap to give over to solar. On costly or strategic plots, especially in industrial zones or near cities, the land can wipe out the per-watt saving over rooftop.
Carport solar: for when the land is already in use
Carports solve a different problem. Nobody picks them because they're cheap. You pick a carport because the ground is a car park you can't hand over to a ground-mount array, and the roof above may not have the space or strength either. The panels make power from paved space that's otherwise doing nothing extra. You also get shaded parking, and it's a natural spot for EV chargers.
Internationally, carports cost more per watt than both rooftop and ground-mount. You're paying for a steel or RCC canopy, deeper foundations to hold up the raised span, and more custom engineering than standard racking.
There isn't yet a solid India-specific price benchmark for carports, unlike the well-established numbers for rooftop and ground-mount. So treat any carport project here as a one-off engineered structure. Get a quote for your site rather than relying on a per-watt rule of thumb.
Solar mounting structure cost in India by type
The mounting structure has its own price, separate from the overall system cost, and it changes a lot with the roof or site. Here's how current Indian benchmarks compare:
Structure type | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
RCC flush mount (flat roof) | Rs 5,000–6,500 per kW | Pedestal-mounted, no roof penetration |
Tin shed clamp mount | Rs 4,000–5,500 per kW | Cheapest where the roof sheeting allows clamp fixing |
Ground-mount with civil work | Rs 7,000–9,000 per kW | Includes foundations and site preparation |
Elevated structure (about 8 ft clearance) | Rs 12,000–16,000 per kW | Costliest; used when the ground below must stay usable |
Getting the structure right matters more than people think. Choosing the right structure and tilt can add 10 to 15 percent to generation, which is why it deserves as much attention as the module or inverter.
How to choose the right solar system type for your site
Don't start by asking which structure is cheapest. Work through these three questions in order.
If the roof works, rooftop is usually the quickest, least hassle route, even with a small premium over ground-mount. If it doesn't but you have spare land, ground-mount gives you the lowest cost per watt and the best output per kW, as long as land acquisition and site work fit your timeline. If you have neither, a carport turns your parking into generating space. Judge its premium on a site quote, not a general benchmark.
The bottom line
No single structure type is always cheapest or best. What matters is what your site gives you. Rooftop wins on speed and keeps land out of the picture. Ground-mount wins on cost per watt and output, provided the land is genuinely spare. Carport does something the other two can't: it makes power from space that's already paved and committed to another use. Its premium deserves a project-specific quote, especially in India, where carport price data is still thin.
